The Long Bridge Project - Program Management

Project Description

Broad Branch Stormwater Retrofit

Client:
Client: Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA)

Project Description:
The Long Bridge Project will increase rail traffic capacity, creating a four-track corridor, and constructing approximately 1.8 miles of improvements including seven rail bridges and pedestrian bridges over land and the Potomac River and related railroad infrastructure between Arlington, VA, and Washington, DC. The Long Bridge Project will construct a new, two-track railroad bridge next to the existing Long Bridge, creating a four-track corridor. A new bike-pedestrian bridge also will be constructed as part of the mitigation to National Park Service (NPS) parkland and will span the Potomac River and George Washington Memorial Parkway, connecting Long Bridge Park directly to East and West Potomac Parks.  The goal of the project is also to reduce the erosion and/or pollution in the affected tributaries. The recommended green infrastructure designs include planter, curb extension and open area bioretention; permeable pavement in parking lanes, sidewalks, and alleys; impervious surface removal; tree plantings, impervious surface removal and other volume reduction and water quality enhancements.

FOXXSTEM is serving as the lead for utility coordination for the 1.8 mile long, $2.1B Long Bridge Project.  Utility coordination and relocation are a major part of this project as utilities may have significant impact to both cost and schedule during design and construction management. The team is implementing practices learned on previous projects of this magnitude.
